ReleasedinFranceasLaKermesseHeroique,CarnivalinFlandersissetduringthelong-agowarbetweentheDutchandSpanish.AtinyvillageinFlandersisinvadedbySpanishtroops.ThetownsfolkhaveheardofSpanishcrueltiesinothertowns,anddecidetodeflectthevanquishersbyplayingdead.Thisisn'tterriblyeffective(youhavetotakeabreathonceinawhile),sothewifeoftheburgomastertriestosoftenuptheinvaderswithalavishcarnival.SosuccessfulisthisventurethattheSpaniardsallowthevillagetoescapebeingdecimated,oreventaxed.Anaward-winnermanytimesover,CarnivalinFlanderswasbannedinGermany;evidently,GoebbelscaughtonthatdirectorJacquesFeyderandscenaristsBernardZimmerandCharlesSpaakweredrawingdeliberateparallelsbetweentheSpanishandthethen-burgeoningNazis.
